Entering a world of salt...

After descending deep into the mine, we slowly made our way through the passageways and every so often a member of our group would stop and lick the walls. At one point, we even licked the floor and I imagine if possible we would have tried to lick the ceiling too. Why had our tour guide told us to do this? It was because we were currently on a tour of the Wielicza Salt Mine and so the entire passageways were made of salt.

Unlike regular mines there was something extremely special about this one, something that has made it a popular tourist destination in Poland. It's not just because it's one of the oldest salt mines in the world, but because in their free time the miners carved sculptures out of the salt.

You'll have to excuse the bad photo, I only had a disposable with me

It's hard to convey the sense of wonder you get at seeing such wonderful scultures made out of solid salt. You do have to pay a small extra fee to be able to take photos, but it is definately worth it. The highlight of the trip though is the marvelous chapel at the end which is a stunning masterpiece.

It's hard to imagine how long it would have taken those miners to be able to carve all these magnificant sculptures and it's a wonderful feeling being able to both learn about the history of the mine while also being able to appreciate such lovely art.

My only regret is that I didn't have a better camera, but that just gives me a good excuse for returning! This definately should be on the must-see list of any person planning a trip to Poland.

Let's start at the very beginning...

...It’s a very good place to start.

I got my first proper experience of travel when I was 10 years old and I spent two weeks with my dad and step-family in Orlando, Florida visiting Disneyworld.

Although it was a very “touristy” trip, it was enough to start my interest in travelling and was the beginning of my adventures. I didn’t get another chance to leave the country again for another 5 years when I was able to take part in a school trip to Berlin, Germany and Krakow, Poland in 2006. From that point, the fire was ignited. Ever since that year I have no stopped travelling and I try to leave the country at least once a year.

So far my travels have taken me to America, England, France, Italy, Germany and Poland and this year I will be visiting Estonia, Latvia and returning to America again. If I have time (and money) I may also try to squeeze in another country as who knows what cheap flights I might find (I recently had to tear myself away from some extremely cheap flights to Berlin)

As I will be returning to Orlando, Florida yet again this year, I felt that the time was right to finally start my own travel blog and share my adventures with others. I’ve been inspired by reading the stories of other bloggers and so hopefully in time I will also inspire others myself as I believe everybody should have the opportunity to travel, it really is one of the most enjoyable things that you can do.
